Get to know Irina: Owner & Skin Expert

skin studio boston

Meet Irina: Founder, Owner, Skin Care Expert & Professional

Skin Studio was founded in Boston in 2005 by Irina Fiksler. Irina is a skin care expert and has been an esthetician for over 18 years. She came from Russia and was trained by highly specialized estheticians in cosmetic and medical treatments at Elizabeth Grady School of Esthetics. Irina started her career by working at a prestigious salon on Newbury Street in Boston. There, she fell in love with skin care treatments and waxing. Consequently, she became a skin care expert and opened Skin Studio to help her clients look their best and improve their confidence.

Irina had felt strongly about helping people with acne, aging, and unwanted hair. She had made it her goal to find the right treatment regimen to prevent breakouts, reduce the signs of aging, and find the most gentle wax for hair removal. Irina has had acne herself and she had long searched for the effective treatments and affordable products to get and maintain the clear complexion she had always wanted. Fortunately she had found the way to clear and prevent acne. That has given her confidence and inspired her to help others.

Irina’s professional goal became to help people to effectively treat common dermatologic conditions. Using the combination of knowledge and experience Irina finds the right treatment to address her client’s specific needs. In addition, as of November 2017, Irina has become an Oncology Certified Esthetician, through intense training and classes. She is so passionate about the industry and wants to help clients with cancer in their healing process, to feel their best.

Skin Studio Expert Irina Fiksler

I was able to sit down with Irina and ask some questions all about her favorite treatments, path to where she is today, and what the next step is for Skin Studio!

What tips can you give to people for at home care?

“You only have one skin! Be comfortable in your own skin!”

“Every women should have an esthetician or ‘skin guru’ that she can open up to about her skin concerns. It’s SO important to be able to ask skin related questions to someone with the knowledge and background.”

“Use SPF every single day.. it’s a must. We all like Vitamin D and it feels good, but it doesn’t look good when you’re 50 or 60 years old.”

What is your favorite facial at Skin Studio?

“The Ultimate Facial.. with me! I absolutely love this facial because it incorporates so many different aspects of our studio. You get a little bit of everything!”

“Ultrasonic Exfoliation, Professional Level Chemical Peel, Diamond Microdermabrasion, and the choice between IPL Skin tightening & LED Light Therapy!”

“I also love a Lactic acid peel because it is ultra-hydrating, gentle, helps with pigmentation, and anti-aging. It’s gentle enough for all ages of skin.”

How do you manage the ongoing information flow and new trends about skin that is continuously coming out?

“Continuing education! This is extremely important to me and my studio. I try to take at least 1 class per quarter, whether in-person or online. In addition, I’ve taken various business courses and courses about different skin care services. My next course is all about LED Light Therapy and how beneficial it is for acneic skin and anti-aging. I can’t wait for it!”

“I require our estheticians to take multiple continuing education courses so they can learn new techniques and stay up to date with all of the new and upcoming trends. It’s always important to keep learning!”

“This industry changes every second. New products and new treatments are being introduced all over the place. I am constantly researching and testing the newest trends. However, I always try out the product on myself before offering it to any clients or my team!”

“It is beneficial to surround yourself with successful and like-minded people… especially for women in business – we need to support each other.”

“A great way to stay up-to-date with the constant flow of information is to follow and listen to other skin care professionals and leaders in the field. Therefore, I even belong to many groups and online societies that discuss various new trends (i.e. different clubs, website platforms, monthly classes, podcasts). You can probably catch me listening to a skin care podcast on my way to and from work.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

“In the room… extractions. Deep pore cleanings during a facial is definitely one of my favorites.”

“But outside of the room.. seeing the results of the hard work that clients and estheticians put in to get healthy and glowing skin. It’s not easy to maintain all of the aspects and it’s always so exciting to see the hard work pay off!”

What's next for Skin Studio?

“I would absolutely love to create my own skin care line and to share it with all of my lovely clients!”

Lemon Water Healthy for Acne Prone Skin

Anytime I hear people say that they are using birth control pills, antibiotics, or medications such as Accutane to control acne, it causes me concern. The customary treatment for acne is to apply a topical product and/or use an oral medication, but is this the best solution? A better approach that addresses the root cause without the side effects of medications may be worth exploring. This article will discuss some of the lesser known causes of acne and better, safer treatments that consider the root cause; in addition, we’ll look at some complementary therapies. The process of acne development includes heightened levels of inflammation, increased sebum (oil) production, colonization on the skin by Propionibacterium acnes (P. acne), and abnormal keratinization (buildup of skin cells). (1) These issues can lead to inflammatory acne (cysts, papules, nodules, and pustules) and the presence of comedones (white heads or black heads), which can get infected and have encouraged a widespread use of antibiotics, both orally and topically, to treat them. In addition, physicians may prescribe drugs such as Accutane (Isotretinion), which address excess oil from the sebaceous glands. Drugs like Accutane, however, can have serious side effects such as birth defects and liver or DNA damage. (15, 16, 17)

Causes of Acne

So, what causes acne to happen in the first place?
The more important, deeper issues may be related
to problems with diet, inflammation, hormone imbalance,
digestion, gut bacteria, and stress.
Acne can be caused any of the following:

Diet

Vitamin Rich Food for Acne Skin

It is often said that diet has no effect on skin conditions or acne, but more recent studies have found that this is simply not the case. A cross sectional study comparing diets between adults with and without moderate/severe acne found that participants with acne were consuming a diet with a greater amount of carbohydrates and higher glycemic (sugar) load and that they had greater insulin resistance. (2) There are some studies that link dairy consumption with acne, as dairy contains anabolic steroids that promote the increased production of androgens (male hormones) and the subsequent development of acne. (2, 3) A Western diet, in general, which often consists of a high calorie intake, high glycemic load, high fat and meat intake, and significant consumption of dairy proteins, increases androgen hormone secretion and over stimulates sebaceous glands. (5) In addition, for cases of inflammatory acne, high levels of Omega 6’s have been associated with an increase in acne in contrast to Omega 3’s, which decrease inflammation. (6)

Hormonal Imbalance

Hormone imbalance appears to be a factor in acne. In a study that followed 120 women with acne for 12 months on a birth control pill, which contains chemical hormones, it was found that acne was significantly reduced in 94% of the women. (8) Birth control pills help regulate female hormones, an indicator that addressing the cause of the hormone imbalance would be a better way to control acne—without all the side effects of a birth control pill. There are many risks and side effects associated with the use of the birth control pill, such as Melasma (7), a skin disorder causing skin hyper pigmentation, blood clots and stroke (18), and the possible risk of breast cancer. (4) More information on birth control risks and side effects for a future blog.

Digestion, Gut & Skin Bacteria

We eliminate toxins in the body from the skin, digestive, and urinary systems by stool, urine, and sweat. If the digestive system isn’t running smoothly, then toxins may exit by an alternative route, such as the skin. A study done on 13,000 adolescents with acne found an increased prevalence of halitosis (bad breath), GERD (heartburn), bloating, and constipation in the participants. (9) Systemic and topical antibiotics have long played a central role in acne therapy. (1) Antibiotic use has been linked to rising rates of antimicrobial resistance, disruption of the gut micro-biome leading to overgrowth of harmful bacteria and development of allergies. (12) The use of probiotics may be beneficial in treating acne—in a study using probiotics for the gut, marked improvement in acne was shown. (10) Long-term use of antibiotics can also disrupt the delicate balance of bacteria on and below the skin surface. In a review of the literature about the gut-brain- skin connection in acne, it was surmised that there is enough evidence to suggest that the gut microbes and the integrity of the gut lining are contributing factors in the acne development process. (11)

Stress & Sleep

Lifestyle factors such as stress and sleep may also play a role in acne development. A cross-sectional study of 144 sixth-year female medical students showed that stress severity strongly correlated with an increase in acne severity. (13) In addition, there is growing research to connect lack of sleep with acne. (14) Sleep has an impact on hormone and immune regulation so getting your Zzzz’s is an important factor in keeping hormones balanced and your immune system working strong to control acne.

Key Approaches to Preventing & Treating Acne

As we’ve seen, many factors can affect the development of acne,
so here are some key things you can do to help prevent or treat it:

• Eat a low-glycemic diet – Fruits (berries are best) and vegetables (especially leafy greens), clean proteins like organic, pasture raised meats, poultry and eggs, and wild fish
• Healthy fats- eliminate trans fats and reduce Omega 6 fats (seed and vegetable oils like soybean and canola) and eat plenty of Omega 3 rich fats like wild caught salmon and ground flax seed

• Eat zinc-rich foods – Oysters, lamb, chicken, ginger, pecans, and pumpkin seeds
• Eat high fiber foods – Vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds that help support the good bacteria in your gut and encourage elimination of toxins
• Drink plenty of clean water throughout the day, ideally half your body weight in ounces to help flush toxins out
• Eat vitamin A rich foods – Spinach, carrots, yams, eggs, ghee, fish
• Take probiotics – They balance gut bacteria, which has an effect on the skin
• Address stress management – Meditation, Heart Math, yoga, acupuncture and massage can all help to reduce stress
• Sleep – Get good quality sleep, preferably between the hours of 10 P.M. and 6 A.M., when your body is in sync with its circadian rhythm and does the most repair work.

Avoid these foods:

• Sugar – It feeds yeast and candida, which creates inflammation and imbalance in the gut and shows up on the skinAvoid Sugar For Acne Prone Skin
• Gluten and wheat – Causes inflammation in the gut, which shows up on the skin
• Dairy – Promotes androgen production and acne
• Processed and refined foods – Breads, cookies, cakes, and crackers that break down into sugar and may contain gluten
• Hydrogenated oils – Found in fried or processed foods and can cause inflammation

Additional complimentary therapies

While working on the root cause of acne, there are also several wonderful physical approaches to treating acne. These can be especially useful for patients with moderate to severe acne. Two of these treatments are phototherapy and chemical peels. It’s best to work with a dermatologist or an aesthetician who can address your concerns and customize a facial for you using professional strength enzymes, exfoliators, corrective peels, serums, and masks along with LED light therapy. LED light helps stimulate collagen and elastin production (great for anti-aging too), kill bacteria, and heal acne. Regular facials can keep your skin looking its best while you work at a deeper level. In conclusion, instead of taking medications that have associated risks and side effects, it may be safer and more effective to approach acne from its root cause while incorporating some physical therapies. In addition to the dietary and lifestyle changes suggested above, it may also be helpful to work with a functional medicine or functional nutrition practitioner to help you balance your hormones and blood sugar levels as well as improve your gut micro-biome, sleep quality, and stress levels. Finally, working on digestion and the integrity of the gut lining, and utilizing healing foods, probiotics, and supplements may all help  substantially to bring acne under control and give you the clearer skin you are seeking.

Welcome, 2018!

Let’s Learn The Basics: Skin Care 101

Our skin is the largest organ & is constantly changing!
It consists of three main layers:

epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous

These layers are made up of various inner appendages that contribute to your skins overall function. Healthy and beautiful skin begins deep within these layers and it is crucial for you to take care of your skin through the use of wholesome products and proper maintenance. When the natural skin barrier is disturbed, its protective functions and appearance are compromised.

As our skin loses moisture and elasticity, it will look and feel more dry, rough, and cracked. However, damage done to the uppermost skin layer can heal without scarring. Alternatively so, if damage reaches the dermis and an inner layer is affected, then scarring is more likely to occur.

Understanding our body’s inner workings is fundamental to learning what is best for our skin!

Keeping your skin looking great and improving conditions such as acne, wrinkles, rosacea, and dry skin can be as easy as getting the right nutrients in your diet. There are several key nutrients and foods that are known to help improve the appearance of your skin.

Your skin provides a protective function and is a great indication of internal health. Healthy skin creates a barrier system to protect the body from external factors such as toxins, bacteria, and UV light. The skin is also a major organ of detoxification. Therefore, it’s important to keep in mind that what is happening on the skin surface may be an indication of what is happening on a deeper level. This may include problems with digestion or detoxification as well as nutrient deficiencies.

We can protect our skin and help improve its appearance by getting some of these important nutrients through food every day. These diet choices along with a healthy lifestyle can help keep your skin healthy and looking great! Remember to also get plenty of sleep, drink clean water, exercise, and minimize stress.

Eat foods rich in:

Vitamin A

– Vitamin A helps cell turnover in the skin and improves immune function. Deficiencies in Vitamin A can result in a dry, flaky complexion.

Foods: apricots, cantaloupe, carrots, chili peppers, cod liver oil, collard greens, egg yolks, dandelion greens, grass-fed butter, ghee, kale, leafy greens, liver, spinach, and sweet potatoes

Vitamin C

– Vitamin C is a powerful anti-oxidant that is important for the production of healthy collagen. It also protects against wrinkles and sun damage.

Foods: bell peppers, citrus, dark leafy greens, camu camu powder, broccoli, brussel sprouts, kiwi, strawberries, grapefruit, Incan berries, cantaloupe, cranberry, cherry, red bell peppers

Foods: nuts, olives, spinach, almonds, sweet potato, avocado, wheat germ, sunflower seeds, butternut squash

Zinc

– Helps to improve immune function and wound healing, protects against UV radiation and helps decrease inflammation. It is especially good for acne, which can also be a symptom of Zinc deficiency.

Foods: kidney, liver, red meat, oysters, shellfish, scallops, and pumpkin seeds, ginger, pecans, brazil nuts, oats, and eggs

Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) Omega 3’s

– EFA’s help to retain water in the skin and plump it up. They also help decrease inflammation in the body and skin for conditions like rosacea and increase skin repair. EFA’s are often deficient in acne conditions. The body cannot produce its own EFAs so these must be obtained through the diet or in supplement form.

Foods: fatty fish like salmon, sardines, tuna, trout, mackerel, herring, white fish, sturgeon. Plant sources include ground flaxseed or flaxseed oil, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, and leafy greens (although plant sources are not considered the best source because they don’t convert well to the critical nutrients you need).

Collagen

– Helps promote skin healing, increases skin hydration and improves skin softness and tone. It provides anti-aging benefits by helping to decrease wrinkles and reverse skin damage.

Collagen peptides also help to improve the hair and nails. Bone broth is a great way to incorporate collagen into your diet. Drink grass-fed organic beef or chicken bone broth, 1-2 cups daily or add grass-fed collagen peptides to your morning smoothie shake.

Selenium

– An anti-oxidant that helps with tissue elasticity and protects the skin from UV light. Food sources are seafood such as tuna and salmon, garlic, brazil nuts, eggs, brown rice, and whole-wheat bread. Brazil nuts are a great source but most people only need 2 nuts a day for adequate selenium intake.

Probiotics

– Provide beneficial bacteria for the gut which can help clear up the skin, especially helpful for improving acne. These can be found in supplemental form but also from fermented food products like kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut and other fermented vegetables.

As you can see, just getting more fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, healthy fats, and good bacteria through fermented foods can go a long way to greater looking skin! One caveat though, you will not get the great results you are looking for if you are still eating inflammatory foods like sugar, alcohol, dairy, and gluten. You may want to try cutting down on these or work with someone like a nutritionist or functional medicine practitioner to help guide you through the process.
