Post Summer Treatments: Professional Peels & Exfoliants

Post_Summer_Chemical_Peels_Skin_Studio_Brighton

Summer is over and it’s time to repair that sun damaged skin.

Chemical peel is a great solution for that.

What is a peel?

A chemical peel is a technique used to improve and smooth the texture of the skin. Chemical peels are intended to remove the outermost dead layers of the skin. As a result, the regenerated skin is usually smoother and revealing clearer, brighter and younger-looking skin underneath. Here at Skin Studio in Brighton, our estheticians work personally with each client to figure out which peel is best suited for their skin care needs.

So what is exfoliation?

The word “exfoliate” comes from the Latin exfoliare (to strip off leaves). It involves the removal of the superficial dead skin cells from the outermost layers of the epidermis. Our trained estheticians here at Skin Studio have experience with each type of peel and know how to effectively treat your skin. Furthermore, chemical peels are effective for sluggish skin, dull looking skin, hyper-pigmentation, photo-aging, wrinkles, scarring, acne, and pre-cancerous lesions.

Let’s look at different exfoliating treatments that we offer at Skin Studio:

Enzymes:

  • An exfoliant, more subtle than a chemical peel
  • Most often made with fruit enzymes (papaya and pineapple are few of examples) that both nourish and slough off dead skin cells
  • Importantly, they dissolve only the top layer of dead skin cells to relieve dryness, clean pores and reveal healthier skin
  • Even though enzymes produce short term results, they do not stop aging. Therefore, do your enzyme treatments on a regular basis!
  • Can be used even by people with very sensitive skin

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s):

AHA’s are very effective because they “unglue” cells and allow them to shed, creating exfoliation and flaking. Therefore, they allow a faster penetration of products.

Most Common Types of AHA’s:

Glycolic Acid:sugar-cane

  • Formulated from sugar cane in its natural form
  • The smallest of all the acid molecules, it penetrates quickly, loosening up keratinized skin cells and exfoliating the superficial top layer of the stratum corneum

Lactic Acid:

  • Derived from sour milk in its natural formmilk
  • The largest of all acid molecules, it is slow to penetrate and tends to be less irritating
  • Brightens and lightens skin
  • Hydrates and exfoliates, reducing wrinkles and pigmentation discolorations

Now let’s look at Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs):

Similar to AHA’s, it detaches dead cells from the layers underneath. However, BHA penetrates deeply to clean pores of excess sebum and dead skin cells.

Most Common Types of BHA’s:willow-tree

Salicylic Acid:

  • An antiseptic exfoliant that deeply cleanses pores.
  • It’s also an excellent treatment for acne and aids in overall skin rejuvenation.
  • Comes from Willow Tree Bark in its natural form
  • Due so, use it for acne, mile rosacea, hyperpigmented and rough skin.

Advanced Combination AHA & BHA:

Modified Jessner:

  • Consists of three main ingredients: lactic acid (assists in the exfoliation of the skin), salicylic acid (aids in penetration), and resorcinol (assists in the treatment of acne)
  • A synergy of effective acids that penetrates uniformly to help reduce the appearance of pigmented irregularities.
  • Recommended for: aging, sun damaged, hyper pigmented and acne-prone skin.

gloRetinol +C

  • Unique and versatile professional exfoliant
  • Provides  an effective way to achieve skin sloughing
  • Could be used as either a stand-alone treatment or to intensify another glo therapuetics chemical exfoliant

Face Reading Part 2

Face JPEG

For thousands of years, face reading (or Mien Shiang) has been performed by Eastern medicine practitioners. Combine Western (analyzing the surface) with Eastern (what’s happening internally) techniques to deliver a unique and insightful consultation.

According to the traditional Chinese medicine your right cheek corresponds to the metal elements which on its side are related to the lung and large intestine network. Also, breakout, eczema, mild acne or redness could be a sign of a cold is coming on. Asthma or any other respiratory problems may also show visual symptoms on your right cheek.

Left cheek corresponds to the wood element which is connected to the liver of the human’s body. In addition, any changes on the skin of you left cheek could be a sign of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, inflammation or congestion of toxins in the liver. Changes in this part of your face could be a sign for emotional issues such as depression.

Your nose corresponds to the earth element which indicates a connection to the stomach, spleen and pancreas network. Excessive worry and stress as well as eating deep-fried fatty food or lots of chocolate could result in changes of your nose skin such as redness or broken capillaries.

EAST :

EYES. PUFFINESS & DARK CIRCLES => related to liver and kidneys; imbalance of fluids, sodium retention, sluggish organ function. It could also mean mental stress or anger; dehydration or poor elimination. Solution: Focus on improving hydration and sleeping habits.

NOSE & UPPER CHEEKS REDNESS => Due to the heart; inflammation of organs; heightened blood pressure. Solution: Calm and hydrate

LOWER CHEEKS BREAKOUTS & CONGESTION => related to the lungs; smoking, asthma, allergies, cold; cardio exercise-sweating.  Solution: Focus on cleansing and exfoliation.

WEST :

EYES. PUFFINESS & DARK CIRCLES => lack of sleep; allergies; heredity. Solution: the must-have product for tired, puffy eyes is glo-therapeutics Eye Restore.

NOSE & UPPER CHEEKS REDNESS => recent cold or allergies; improper extraction techniques. Furthermore, it could point to early stages of rosacea. Solution: Hydrate with glo-therapeutics Soothing Gel mask.

LOWER CHEEKS BREAKOUTS & CONGESTION => irritating, comedogenic
cosmetics; phones/hand resting on face. Solution: Focus on cleansing and exfoliation. Also try glo-therapeutics Daily Polishing Cleanser.

What is BB cream?

BB cream is a multifunctional cream that is known as a Beauty Balm, Blemish Base or Brilliant Beauty.

The cream could brighten skin like a lightener and even skin tone like a foundation. Moreover, it can treat acne like a breakout treatment, hydrate like a moisturizer & protect like a sunscreen.

A German dermatologist invented the concept back in 1960’s. She needed a product that would protect and sooth the skin of her patients after laser treatment, peels and surgery. In 1980’s the product became very popular for its lightning properties among Japanese and South Korean young television soap stars that were camera-ready with their porcelain white complexions.

The BB cream is a great option for women that do not have a lot of time or desire to apply several products in the morning. Our version of the BB cream is Sheer Tint Base. It is made with a blend of  antioxidants vitamin A, C, E & green tea extract. Sheer tint base delicately covers flaws while providing skin with a sheer, healthy glow. Vitamin A is a powerful exfoliant, that decreases sebum (an oily secretion of the sebaceous glands) production and treats acne. Vitamin C improves skin elasticity, decreases wrinkles by stimulating collagen synthesis. It also promotes wound healing, and repairs sun damage. Vitamin E fights off free radicals that cause the signs of aging, repairs dry, rough skin. In addition, green tea extract lightens skin, fights inflammation, rejuvenates skin cells and prevents skin cancer.

Stop by our studio in Brighton and we will find the perfect shade of sheer tint base to match your skin tone.

Skin Care in Your 30s

Thirty’s are may be the new twenties but the visual signs of aging begins at this age. Fine lines and wrinkles start to appear, as the skin becomes thinner and production of collagen and elastin starts to slow down. The eyes usually show signs of aging first. Read on to learn more about proper skin care in your 30s.

If your skin was flawless and beautiful in your 20’s without an extra effort, your 30’s is the time to enhance your skin care regiment with the following steps:

1. Clean & Exfoliate

– Cleansing is the most important step in skin care because clean skin is healthy skin. Dull skin can make us look older than we actually are, to prevent that use an exfoliant like Daily Polishing Cleanser. The unique powder formulation effectively cleanses and exfoliates the skin. A combination of jojoba beads that gently exfoliate and salicylic acid that penetrates deeply into the pores to eliminate build-up result in a radiant and evenly-toned skin

2. Accelerate Cell Turnover

– In our 30’s the cell renewal rate usually slows down. Exfoliating with alpha hydroxy acid and retinol helps to remove layers of dead skin cells and accelerate skin renewal. Serum Retinol CS is a great combination of 3% Retinol that accelerates cellular renewal while 5% Glycolic Acid smoothes skin and improves its texture

3. Use Antioxidants

– Antioxidants help repair and prevent damage of the skin, increase collagen production, promote healing and help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. 15% Vitamin C Serum visibly transforms skin’s clarity and reduces the appearance of fine lines. High dose of vitamin C scavenges and destroys reactive oxidizing agents and other free radicals while provides protection against UV radiation and improves skin elasticity

4. Hydrate Inside & Out

– Human body is 60-70% water, drinking enough water is essential for the healthy body and skin. Water gives the skin fresh and radiant glow. Hydrated skin shows fewer signs of aging; therefore, increase the use of moisturizers and hydrating serums. Try B5 Hydration that helps restore the skin’s elasticity with the perfect balance of nourishment and hydration. Hyaluronic acid delivers and maintains water hydration and pro-vitamin B5 assists in stabilizing the moisture content of the skin

5. Protect

– To prevent wrinkles sunscreen must be step in your daily skin care regiment. Try Oil Free SPF 40+ Sunscreen. It provides broad spectrum protection from the sun’s damaging rays while nourishing hydrators and antioxidants help fortify the skin. Hyaluronic acid attracts and maintains hydration to hold 1000 times its weight in water; vitamin E, an antioxidant, protects from oxidative stress and has anti-inflammatory properties

6. Always Look Well Rested

– Thirties, possibly, the busiest time of your life and it’s also the time when dark circles under your eyes start to develop. Using Vital Eye Cream will help hydrate the eye area, leaving it appearing smooth and revitalized. Active ingredient eyeliss helps to prevent puffiness and reduces under eye circles while chamomilla flower extract is an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties

7. Have a monthly facial

– a deep cleaning facial with alpha hydroxy acid to hydrate and rejuvenate your skin. Our Hydration Party Treatment with gingko biloba mask, collagen eye mask and lactic acid is ultra energizing. Learn more about different facials we offer and schedule your facial with us!

If you didn’t develop healthy habits in your 20’s, it’s never too late to start now.
Working out regularly, adapting healthy diet and boosting your skin care regiment are great way to maintain your body and skin for many decades to come.

Skin Care in Your 20s

Most important objective of skin care in your 20s is to develop good habits that could be applied to skin care, fitness or a diet. When it comes to skin care, create simple routine that you will be able to use through your whole life for a beautiful, youthful skin.

At this age it’s all about prevention.  Here are some simple daily steps to follow:

1. Use facial cleanser – wash your face thoroughly to prevent large pores. We recommend trying Purifying Gel Cleanser. Main ingredient – salicylic acid, deeply cleanses pores while antioxidants protect and soothe the skin

2. Use clearing pads – to balance, calm and purify the skin. Try Clear Complexion Pads that gently breaks down excess sebum, immediately balancing oily skin and helping prevent the growth of acne-causing bacteria. Sodium chlorite breaks apart oily secretion and bacteria while preventing regrowth of bacteria. Citric acid, acts as a natural preservative, softens the skin and adjusts acid-alkaline balance

3. Exfoliate – it is the best way to prevent build up and establish regular regenerative cycle. We recommend trying Refresh Facial Polish,  a gentle facial polish that revives and refreshes the skin. The soothing botanical-based formulation has a combination of jojoba beads that gently exfoliate while refined polyethylene beads remove debris from the skin’s surface without irritation

4. Use mask – to prevent and heal break outs and hydrating the skin. We recommend Soothing Gel Mask that cools and calms sensitive or irritated skin with a soothing complex of antioxidants calendula, wild yam and vitamin E. Another great mask to try is Refining Clay Mask. Oil-absorbing clay purifies the skin and calms irritation while proven blemish fighting ingredients tea tree and zinc reduce the appearance of pores and refine skin’s texture

5. Take care of your eyes – hydrate, sooth and protect your eyes, after all, they are the focal point of your face. Try Eye Restore to prevent appearance of fine lines and puffiness and restore skin’s texture. Eye Restore contains palmitoyl oligopeptide that stimulates cell growth, increases skin thickness, and helps correct discoloration, while an antioxidant green tea extract has anti-inflammatory properties

In youth, your body is surging with everything it needs to perform its best. Establish positive habits with fitness and healthy eating now and you will have a positive foundation for years to come.

New Year – New You

It’s a custom for many people to make New Year’s resolutions and try to achieve them by year’s end. Losing weight and exercising more are the two most popular resolutions. In January most gyms are crowded with new determined members. However, by February half of newcomers stop going and by March only regulars are left.

This year let’s make resolutions that are easy and achievable so by the end of the year we could be proud that we achieved them all.

1. Find an activity you enjoy – If running on a treadmill or lifting weights are not activities you enjoy, check out the list of classes your gym offers. For example, Zumba is a fun dance class while yoga is a physical, mental, and spiritual exercise. If you don’t belong to a gym simply start walking, for instance during lunch time

2. Eat an apple before each meal – Apples offer fiber, volume, and will fill up your stomach so you will be full faster and you don’t overeat. Don’t have apple handy? Glass of water will have the same effect

3. Create more long weekends – Adding another day-off to your weekend helps to de-stress and relax, take a break once in a while and you will have a more positive outlook on life

4. Declutter – It’s hard to start throwing away items from your closet or office that you’ve had a long time. We all have tops in the closet that we haven’t worn in two years. By now fashion has changed so it’s time to say “good bye” and make some room for new, trendy items.

5. Take care of your skin:
• Wash you face with a face cleanser (not a bar soap) and moisturize every day
• Exfoliate at least 3 times a week
• Have a facial once a month
• Apply eye cream daily
• Use non-petroleum based lip balm

Be on the way to healthier, happier you with these easy New Year’s resolutions

Protect Skin in Cold Weather

Thanksgiving is right around the corner…so is the winter, so are the low temperatures.  Cold, dry air and heat both dehydrate our skin; leaving it dry, itchy and irritated. There are several ways to keep your skin hydrated during the winter months.

One way is to moisture the air in your house or office by using a humidifier. Humidifier adds moisture to the air by releasing water vapors.

Another way to help your skin feel less dry and itchy is to avoid long and hot showers, because they dehydrate the skin. You should also add a body moisturizer  to your daily routine.   After bath or shower, towel dry your body without rubbing and apply moisturizer while your body is not completely dry.  Don’t forget about your hands. Our hands tend to dry and age first, because there are no oil glands to keep them hydrated. If possible, apply hand lotion after each hand wash. Ask us about the body moisturizer and hand cream that we offer.

Now, let’s talk about skin care for your face.  To make sure your skin stays hydrated, don’t forget to exfoliate at least once a day, using daily polish or scrub and follow these steps as your daily skin care regimen:

Step one:  use gentle milky cleanser to remove make up and wash away any dirt from the pores; towel dry, do not rub.

Step two:  use tonic to balance, hydrate and purify the skin. Before the tonic is completely absorbed by your skin, apply serum.

Step three: use serum to protect, enhance, increase hydration, and sooth the skin. Before serum is completely absorbed by your skin, apply moisturizer.

Step four: use moisturizer to seal in the moisture from tonic and serum and to add antioxidant-rich blend of moisturizing ingredients.

Use a moisturizer with at least SPF 15 (even in the winter) to protect your skin from the sun.

Please ask us for products that will work best for your skin, like cold weather cleanser, tonic, serum and moisturizers for face and body.
