Get to know Irina: Owner & Skin Expert

skin studio boston

Meet Irina: Founder, Owner, Skin Care Expert & Professional

Skin Studio was founded in Boston in 2005 by Irina Fiksler. Irina is a skin care expert and has been an esthetician for over 18 years. She came from Russia and was trained by highly specialized estheticians in cosmetic and medical treatments at Elizabeth Grady School of Esthetics. Irina started her career by working at a prestigious salon on Newbury Street in Boston. There, she fell in love with skin care treatments and waxing. Consequently, she became a skin care expert and opened Skin Studio to help her clients look their best and improve their confidence.

Irina had felt strongly about helping people with acne, aging, and unwanted hair. She had made it her goal to find the right treatment regimen to prevent breakouts, reduce the signs of aging, and find the most gentle wax for hair removal. Irina has had acne herself and she had long searched for the effective treatments and affordable products to get and maintain the clear complexion she had always wanted. Fortunately she had found the way to clear and prevent acne. That has given her confidence and inspired her to help others.

Irina’s professional goal became to help people to effectively treat common dermatologic conditions. Using the combination of knowledge and experience Irina finds the right treatment to address her client’s specific needs. In addition, as of November 2017, Irina has become an Oncology Certified Esthetician, through intense training and classes. She is so passionate about the industry and wants to help clients with cancer in their healing process, to feel their best.

Skin Studio Expert Irina Fiksler

I was able to sit down with Irina and ask some questions all about her favorite treatments, path to where she is today, and what the next step is for Skin Studio!

What tips can you give to people for at home care?

“You only have one skin! Be comfortable in your own skin!”

“Every women should have an esthetician or ‘skin guru’ that she can open up to about her skin concerns. It’s SO important to be able to ask skin related questions to someone with the knowledge and background.”

“Use SPF every single day.. it’s a must. We all like Vitamin D and it feels good, but it doesn’t look good when you’re 50 or 60 years old.”

What is your favorite facial at Skin Studio?

“The Ultimate Facial.. with me! I absolutely love this facial because it incorporates so many different aspects of our studio. You get a little bit of everything!”

“Ultrasonic Exfoliation, Professional Level Chemical Peel, Diamond Microdermabrasion, and the choice between IPL Skin tightening & LED Light Therapy!”

“I also love a Lactic acid peel because it is ultra-hydrating, gentle, helps with pigmentation, and anti-aging. It’s gentle enough for all ages of skin.”

How do you manage the ongoing information flow and new trends about skin that is continuously coming out?

“Continuing education! This is extremely important to me and my studio. I try to take at least 1 class per quarter, whether in-person or online. In addition, I’ve taken various business courses and courses about different skin care services. My next course is all about LED Light Therapy and how beneficial it is for acneic skin and anti-aging. I can’t wait for it!”

“I require our estheticians to take multiple continuing education courses so they can learn new techniques and stay up to date with all of the new and upcoming trends. It’s always important to keep learning!”

“This industry changes every second. New products and new treatments are being introduced all over the place. I am constantly researching and testing the newest trends. However, I always try out the product on myself before offering it to any clients or my team!”

“It is beneficial to surround yourself with successful and like-minded people… especially for women in business – we need to support each other.”

“A great way to stay up-to-date with the constant flow of information is to follow and listen to other skin care professionals and leaders in the field. Therefore, I even belong to many groups and online societies that discuss various new trends (i.e. different clubs, website platforms, monthly classes, podcasts). You can probably catch me listening to a skin care podcast on my way to and from work.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

“In the room… extractions. Deep pore cleanings during a facial is definitely one of my favorites.”

“But outside of the room.. seeing the results of the hard work that clients and estheticians put in to get healthy and glowing skin. It’s not easy to maintain all of the aspects and it’s always so exciting to see the hard work pay off!”

What's next for Skin Studio?

“I would absolutely love to create my own skin care line and to share it with all of my lovely clients!”

Top Nutrients and Foods for Great Skin by Anne Lemons

nutrients and foods for great skin

Keeping your skin looking great and improving conditions such as acne, wrinkles, rosacea, and dry skin can be as easy as getting the right nutrients in your diet. There are several key nutrients and foods that are known to help improve the appearance of your skin.

Your skin provides a protective function and is a great indication of internal health. Healthy skin creates a barrier system to protect the body from external factors such as toxins, bacteria, and UV light. The skin is also a major organ of detoxification. Therefore, it’s important to keep in mind that what is happening on the skin surface may be an indication of what is happening on a deeper level. This may include problems with digestion or detoxification as well as nutrient deficiencies.

We can protect our skin and help improve its appearance by getting some of these important nutrients through food every day. These diet choices along with a healthy lifestyle can help keep your skin healthy and looking great! Remember to also get plenty of sleep, drink clean water, exercise, and minimize stress.

Eat foods rich in:

Vitamin A

– Vitamin A helps cell turnover in the skin and improves immune function. Deficiencies in Vitamin A can result in a dry, flaky complexion.

Foods: apricots, cantaloupe, carrots, chili peppers, cod liver oil, collard greens, egg yolks, dandelion greens, grass-fed butter, ghee, kale, leafy greens, liver, spinach, and sweet potatoes

Vitamin C

– Vitamin C is a powerful anti-oxidant that is important for the production of healthy collagen. It also protects against wrinkles and sun damage.

Foods: bell peppers, citrus, dark leafy greens, camu camu powder, broccoli, brussel sprouts, kiwi, strawberries, grapefruit, Incan berries, cantaloupe, cranberry, cherry, red bell peppers

nutrients and foods for great skin• Vitamin E – Vitamin E is an anti-oxidant so this also helps protect that barrier system against the effects of the sun and the environment.

Foods: nuts, olives, spinach, almonds, sweet potato, avocado, wheat germ, sunflower seeds, butternut squash

Zinc

– Helps to improve immune function and wound healing, protects against UV radiation and helps decrease inflammation. It is especially good for acne, which can also be a symptom of Zinc deficiency.

Foods: kidney, liver, red meat, oysters, shellfish, scallops, and pumpkin seeds, ginger, pecans, brazil nuts, oats, and eggs

Essential Fatty Acids (EFA’s) Omega 3’s

– EFA’s help to retain water in the skin and plump it up. They also help decrease inflammation in the body and skin for conditions like rosacea and increase skin repair. EFA’s are often deficient in acne conditions. The body cannot produce its own EFAs so these must be obtained through the diet or in supplement form.

Foods: fatty fish like salmon, sardines, tuna, trout, mackerel, herring, white fish, sturgeon. Plant sources include ground flaxseed or flaxseed oil, chia seeds, pumpkin seeds, walnuts, and leafy greens (although plant sources are not considered the best source because they don’t convert well to the critical nutrients you need).

nutrients and foods for great skin

Collagen

– Helps promote skin healing, increases skin hydration and improves skin softness and tone. It provides anti-aging benefits by helping to decrease wrinkles and reverse skin damage.

Collagen peptides also help to improve the hair and nails. Bone broth is a great way to incorporate collagen into your diet. Drink grass-fed organic beef or chicken bone broth, 1-2 cups daily or add grass-fed collagen peptides to your morning smoothie shake.

Selenium

– An anti-oxidant that helps with tissue elasticity and protects the skin from UV light. Food sources are seafood such as tuna and salmon, garlic, brazil nuts, eggs, brown rice, and whole-wheat bread. Brazil nuts are a great source but most people only need 2 nuts a day for adequate selenium intake.

nutrients and foods for great skin

Probiotics

– Provide beneficial bacteria for the gut which can help clear up the skin, especially helpful for improving acne. These can be found in supplemental form but also from fermented food products like kefir, kimchi, sauerkraut and other fermented vegetables.

As you can see, just getting more fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, healthy fats, and good bacteria through fermented foods can go a long way to greater looking skin! One caveat though, you will not get the great results you are looking for if you are still eating inflammatory foods like sugar, alcohol, dairy, and gluten. You may want to try cutting down on these or work with someone like a nutritionist or functional medicine practitioner to help guide you through the process.

Facial of the Month:
Microdermabrasion

Diamond Microdermabrasion is a technique that removes the topmost layer of skin, while leaving it more supple and vibrant. Our microdermabrasion system removes this layer by gently polishing the skin with natural diamond chips bonded to the tip of the wand. Lactic Treatment: Winterproof Your Skin!

Winter skin care

Chilly temperatures, cold wind and excessive heat can strip skin of natural oils, causing imbalance and sensitivity. Answer your skin’s distress call and customize your seasonal regimen by switching to a heavier moisturizer or by adding a hydrating boost (serum) to your current moisturizer.

Colder weather and winter’s sunny days can be harsh for your skin. For some people the winter cold days bring much more than a rosy glow to the cheeks. They also bring  uncomfortable dryness to the skin and sometimes it results in flaking, cracking and even eczema.

To prevent your skin from being dry, use gentle cleanser, warm quick showers, not hot. Using humidifier in your bedroom also helps infuse the air with moisture, soothing dried out, itchy, cracked skin.

At Skin Studio we can increase hydration in your skin by applying Lactic Treatment. This procedure also improves the appearance of fine lines with exfoliation and moisture retention. Great for dry, sun damaged and dehydrated skin.  Lactic acid is derived from sour or fermented milk and it is a popular beauty aid for those seeking to improve their skin’s texture and hydration level.

Keep your skin well moisturized by using the proper serums and moisturizers.

Get serious about moisture

SERUMS:

Pure Hydratation – Boosts hydration through an infusion of water binding humectants.

B5 Hydratation – Also restores skin’s suppleness through a balance of nourishment and hydration.

Advanced B5 Hydratation – In addition, hyaluronic acid and vitamin B5 naturally provide exceptional nourishment and hydration to the skin.

MOISTURIZERS:

Conditioning Hydration Cream – Hydrates, strengthens and conditions dry skin with an antioxidant-rich blend of moisturizing ingredients.

Vita E Essential Cream – Replenishes moisture and fortifies skin with antioxidants. In addition, works synergistically with Vitamin C to maintain the health of collagen.

Moisture Rich Cream – Restores and repairs skin with nutrient-rich, ultra hydrating ingredients.

Restorative Cream – Protects and repairs fragile skin. Ideal for dry, mature or environmentally damaged skin.

Barrier Balm – Relieves extremely dry or chapped skin with hydrating and protective ingredients that improve skin integrity.

Your moisturizer is designed to smooth and condition the outermost layers of the epidermis. In fact, think of a moisturizer as layering (or cushioning), similar to how we layer clothing in cold weather.

Active and Inactive Ingredients

How many times have you looked at the label and wondered what is the difference between active and inactive ingredients? Whether it’s a skin care product or a household cleaner the definition of active and inactive ingredients is the same.

Active ingredients have an effect and carry out an action, for example glycolic acid is a powerful exfoliant with cell renewal properties. Inactive ingredients deliver the active ingredients, act as a preservative and make the product appealing to the eye.

One of the keys to keep your skin youthful is to make sure all the active ingredients are absorbed by your skin. Have you noticed that during your facial treatment your esthetician massages and steams your skin? Those steps are necessary to stimulate and heat the tissue for maximum absorption.

To illustrate active and inactive ingredients in action let’s look at our Simple Treatment. It’s a customized cleansing facial that includes essential steps to aid in maintenance of healthy skin with relaxing massage of the face, neck and shoulders that will rejuvenate you. This facial treatment consists of:

A. Pumpkin Enzyme Scrub that removes dead skin cell build up and stimulates cell regeneration with granules and enyzmes that exfoliate without stress or irritation to the skin. List of active ingredients includes: Date Seeds & Jojoba Beads that provide natural, gentle physical exfoliation without stress to the skin; Rice Extract is an exfoliant that is moisturizing, conditioning, and soothing; Sphingolipids are fatty molecules that help protect cell surfaces against harmful environmental factors. List of inactive ingredients includes: Stearic Acid that helps water and oils mix; Cetyl Alcohol that makes product foam, Xanthan Gum helps with consistency.

B. Depending on your skin type soothing gel mask or refining mask is final step in the treatment:

Soothing Gel Mask cools and calms sensitive or irritated skin with a soothing complex of antioxidants and vitamins. List of active ingredients includes: Calendula Extract a flower extract rich in antioxidants, also soothing and calming; Wild Yam Extract is an antioxidant with anti-wrinkle proporties; Vitamin E is an antioxidant that heals and repairs. List of inactive ingredients include: Glycerin is a syrup-like ingredient that improves skin elasticity and protects skin against irritation; Niacinamide is a water-soluble form of Vitamin B3, that improves circulation in the skin, reducing the appearance of wrinkles; Retinyl Palmitate increases skin’s collagen production.

Refining Mask is a oil-absorbing clay mask that purifies skin and calms irritation while proven blemish fighting ingredients reduce the appearance of pores and refine skin’s texture. List of active  ingredients includes: Sulfur used for acneic skin due to its healing, antibacterial and oil balancing properties with cell-regenerating functions; Zinc is an antibacterial that used to boost the immune system at the cellular level and accelerate healing of wounds; Tea Tree is essential oil antimicrobial and anti-bacteria properties that helps fight acne. List of inactive ingredients includes: Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride that derived from coconut oil, it keeps skin hydrated and gives products liquid feel so they can glide on skin more gently; Bentonite is a type of absorbent clay, ideal for people with oily skin; Dimethicone is a silicone that locks moisture into skin and prevents bacteria from entering skin.

The professional products we use at Skin Care Studio by Irina in Brookline have a higher percentage of active ingredients that deliver desired results faster, while products sold at drug stores may have the same active ingredients but only half of the amount thus they work slower.

Make your facial treatment appointment today and we will tell you all about active and inactive ingredients in each for the products we use in your treatment!

What is BB cream?

BB cream is a multifunctional cream that is known as a Beauty Balm, Blemish Base or Brilliant Beauty.

The cream could brighten skin like a lightener and even skin tone like a foundation. Moreover, it can treat acne like a breakout treatment, hydrate like a moisturizer & protect like a sunscreen.

A German dermatologist invented the concept back in 1960’s. She needed a product that would protect and sooth the skin of her patients after laser treatment, peels and surgery. In 1980’s the product became very popular for its lightning properties among Japanese and South Korean young television soap stars that were camera-ready with their porcelain white complexions.

The BB cream is a great option for women that do not have a lot of time or desire to apply several products in the morning. Our version of the BB cream is Sheer Tint Base. It is made with a blend of  antioxidants vitamin A, C, E & green tea extract. Sheer tint base delicately covers flaws while providing skin with a sheer, healthy glow. Vitamin A is a powerful exfoliant, that decreases sebum (an oily secretion of the sebaceous glands) production and treats acne. Vitamin C improves skin elasticity, decreases wrinkles by stimulating collagen synthesis. It also promotes wound healing, and repairs sun damage. Vitamin E fights off free radicals that cause the signs of aging, repairs dry, rough skin. In addition, green tea extract lightens skin, fights inflammation, rejuvenates skin cells and prevents skin cancer.

Stop by our studio in Brighton and we will find the perfect shade of sheer tint base to match your skin tone.

Skin Care in Your 30s

Thirty’s are may be the new twenties but the visual signs of aging begins at this age. Fine lines and wrinkles start to appear, as the skin becomes thinner and production of collagen and elastin starts to slow down. The eyes usually show signs of aging first. Read on to learn more about proper skin care in your 30s.

If your skin was flawless and beautiful in your 20’s without an extra effort, your 30’s is the time to enhance your skin care regiment with the following steps:

1. Clean & Exfoliate

– Cleansing is the most important step in skin care because clean skin is healthy skin. Dull skin can make us look older than we actually are, to prevent that use an exfoliant like Daily Polishing Cleanser. The unique powder formulation effectively cleanses and exfoliates the skin. A combination of jojoba beads that gently exfoliate and salicylic acid that penetrates deeply into the pores to eliminate build-up result in a radiant and evenly-toned skin

2. Accelerate Cell Turnover

– In our 30’s the cell renewal rate usually slows down. Exfoliating with alpha hydroxy acid and retinol helps to remove layers of dead skin cells and accelerate skin renewal. Serum Retinol CS is a great combination of 3% Retinol that accelerates cellular renewal while 5% Glycolic Acid smoothes skin and improves its texture

3. Use Antioxidants

– Antioxidants help repair and prevent damage of the skin, increase collagen production, promote healing and help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. 15% Vitamin C Serum visibly transforms skin’s clarity and reduces the appearance of fine lines. High dose of vitamin C scavenges and destroys reactive oxidizing agents and other free radicals while provides protection against UV radiation and improves skin elasticity

4. Hydrate Inside & Out

– Human body is 60-70% water, drinking enough water is essential for the healthy body and skin. Water gives the skin fresh and radiant glow. Hydrated skin shows fewer signs of aging; therefore, increase the use of moisturizers and hydrating serums. Try B5 Hydration that helps restore the skin’s elasticity with the perfect balance of nourishment and hydration. Hyaluronic acid delivers and maintains water hydration and pro-vitamin B5 assists in stabilizing the moisture content of the skin

5. Protect

– To prevent wrinkles sunscreen must be step in your daily skin care regiment. Try Oil Free SPF 40+ Sunscreen. It provides broad spectrum protection from the sun’s damaging rays while nourishing hydrators and antioxidants help fortify the skin. Hyaluronic acid attracts and maintains hydration to hold 1000 times its weight in water; vitamin E, an antioxidant, protects from oxidative stress and has anti-inflammatory properties

6. Always Look Well Rested

– Thirties, possibly, the busiest time of your life and it’s also the time when dark circles under your eyes start to develop. Using Vital Eye Cream will help hydrate the eye area, leaving it appearing smooth and revitalized. Active ingredient eyeliss helps to prevent puffiness and reduces under eye circles while chamomilla flower extract is an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties

7. Have a monthly facial

– a deep cleaning facial with alpha hydroxy acid to hydrate and rejuvenate your skin. Our Hydration Party Treatment with gingko biloba mask, collagen eye mask and lactic acid is ultra energizing. Learn more about different facials we offer and schedule your facial with us!

If you didn’t develop healthy habits in your 20’s, it’s never too late to start now.
Working out regularly, adapting healthy diet and boosting your skin care regiment are great way to maintain your body and skin for many decades to come.
