Meet Irina: Founder, Owner, Skin Care Expert & Professional

Skin Studio was founded in Boston in 2005 by Irina Fiksler. Irina is a skin care expert and has been an esthetician for over 18 years. She came from Russia and was trained by highly specialized estheticians in cosmetic and medical treatments at Elizabeth Grady School of Esthetics. Irina started her career by working at a prestigious salon on Newbury Street in Boston. There, she fell in love with skin care treatments and waxing. Consequently, she became a skin care expert and opened Skin Studio to help her clients look their best and improve their confidence.

Irina had felt strongly about helping people with acne, aging, and unwanted hair. She had made it her goal to find the right treatment regimen to prevent breakouts, reduce the signs of aging, and find the most gentle wax for hair removal. Irina has had acne herself and she had long searched for the effective treatments and affordable products to get and maintain the clear complexion she had always wanted. Fortunately she had found the way to clear and prevent acne. That has given her confidence and inspired her to help others.

Irina’s professional goal became to help people to effectively treat common dermatologic conditions. Using the combination of knowledge and experience Irina finds the right treatment to address her client’s specific needs. In addition, as of November 2017, Irina has become an Oncology Certified Esthetician, through intense training and classes. She is so passionate about the industry and wants to help clients with cancer in their healing process, to feel their best.

Skin Studio Expert Irina Fiksler

I was able to sit down with Irina and ask some questions all about her favorite treatments, path to where she is today, and what the next step is for Skin Studio!

What tips can you give to people for at home care?

“You only have one skin! Be comfortable in your own skin!”

“Every women should have an esthetician or ‘skin guru’ that she can open up to about her skin concerns. It’s SO important to be able to ask skin related questions to someone with the knowledge and background.”

“Use SPF every single day.. it’s a must. We all like Vitamin D and it feels good, but it doesn’t look good when you’re 50 or 60 years old.”

What is your favorite facial at Skin Studio?

“The Ultimate Facial.. with me! I absolutely love this facial because it incorporates so many different aspects of our studio. You get a little bit of everything!”

“Ultrasonic Exfoliation, Professional Level Chemical Peel, Diamond Microdermabrasion, and the choice between IPL Skin tightening & LED Light Therapy!”

“I also love a Lactic acid peel because it is ultra-hydrating, gentle, helps with pigmentation, and anti-aging. It’s gentle enough for all ages of skin.”

How do you manage the ongoing information flow and new trends about skin that is continuously coming out?

“Continuing education! This is extremely important to me and my studio. I try to take at least 1 class per quarter, whether in-person or online. In addition, I’ve taken various business courses and courses about different skin care services. My next course is all about LED Light Therapy and how beneficial it is for acneic skin and anti-aging. I can’t wait for it!”

“I require our estheticians to take multiple continuing education courses so they can learn new techniques and stay up to date with all of the new and upcoming trends. It’s always important to keep learning!”

“This industry changes every second. New products and new treatments are being introduced all over the place. I am constantly researching and testing the newest trends. However, I always try out the product on myself before offering it to any clients or my team!”

“It is beneficial to surround yourself with successful and like-minded people… especially for women in business – we need to support each other.”

“A great way to stay up-to-date with the constant flow of information is to follow and listen to other skin care professionals and leaders in the field. Therefore, I even belong to many groups and online societies that discuss various new trends (i.e. different clubs, website platforms, monthly classes, podcasts). You can probably catch me listening to a skin care podcast on my way to and from work.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

“In the room… extractions. Deep pore cleanings during a facial is definitely one of my favorites.”

“But outside of the room.. seeing the results of the hard work that clients and estheticians put in to get healthy and glowing skin. It’s not easy to maintain all of the aspects and it’s always so exciting to see the hard work pay off!”

What's next for Skin Studio?

“I would absolutely love to create my own skin care line and to share it with all of my lovely clients!”

Post Summer Treatments: Professional Peels & Exfoliants

Post_Summer_Chemical_Peels_Skin_Studio_Brighton

Summer is over and it’s time to repair that sun damaged skin.

Chemical peel is a great solution for that.

What is a peel?

A chemical peel is a technique used to improve and smooth the texture of the skin. Chemical peels are intended to remove the outermost dead layers of the skin. As a result, the regenerated skin is usually smoother and revealing clearer, brighter and younger-looking skin underneath. Here at Skin Studio in Brighton, our estheticians work personally with each client to figure out which peel is best suited for their skin care needs.

So what is exfoliation?

The word “exfoliate” comes from the Latin exfoliare (to strip off leaves). It involves the removal of the superficial dead skin cells from the outermost layers of the epidermis. Our trained estheticians here at Skin Studio have experience with each type of peel and know how to effectively treat your skin. Furthermore, chemical peels are effective for sluggish skin, dull looking skin, hyper-pigmentation, photo-aging, wrinkles, scarring, acne, and pre-cancerous lesions.

Let’s look at different exfoliating treatments that we offer at Skin Studio:

Enzymes:

  • An exfoliant, more subtle than a chemical peel
  • Most often made with fruit enzymes (papaya and pineapple are few of examples) that both nourish and slough off dead skin cells
  • Importantly, they dissolve only the top layer of dead skin cells to relieve dryness, clean pores and reveal healthier skin
  • Even though enzymes produce short term results, they do not stop aging. Therefore, do your enzyme treatments on a regular basis!
  • Can be used even by people with very sensitive skin

Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA’s):

AHA’s are very effective because they “unglue” cells and allow them to shed, creating exfoliation and flaking. Therefore, they allow a faster penetration of products.

Most Common Types of AHA’s:

Glycolic Acid:sugar-cane

  • Formulated from sugar cane in its natural form
  • The smallest of all the acid molecules, it penetrates quickly, loosening up keratinized skin cells and exfoliating the superficial top layer of the stratum corneum

Lactic Acid:

  • Derived from sour milk in its natural formmilk
  • The largest of all acid molecules, it is slow to penetrate and tends to be less irritating
  • Brightens and lightens skin
  • Hydrates and exfoliates, reducing wrinkles and pigmentation discolorations

Now let’s look at Beta Hydroxy Acids (BHAs):

Similar to AHA’s, it detaches dead cells from the layers underneath. However, BHA penetrates deeply to clean pores of excess sebum and dead skin cells.

Most Common Types of BHA’s:willow-tree

Salicylic Acid:

  • An antiseptic exfoliant that deeply cleanses pores.
  • It’s also an excellent treatment for acne and aids in overall skin rejuvenation.
  • Comes from Willow Tree Bark in its natural form
  • Due so, use it for acne, mile rosacea, hyperpigmented and rough skin.

Advanced Combination AHA & BHA:

Modified Jessner:

  • Consists of three main ingredients: lactic acid (assists in the exfoliation of the skin), salicylic acid (aids in penetration), and resorcinol (assists in the treatment of acne)
  • A synergy of effective acids that penetrates uniformly to help reduce the appearance of pigmented irregularities.
  • Recommended for: aging, sun damaged, hyper pigmented and acne-prone skin.

gloRetinol +C

  • Unique and versatile professional exfoliant
  • Provides  an effective way to achieve skin sloughing
  • Could be used as either a stand-alone treatment or to intensify another glo therapuetics chemical exfoliant

Skin Care in Your 40s

Women in their 40’s possess elegance, beauty and knowledge. 40’s is the time when your body goes though hormonal changes that could have effect on your skin. Collagen and elastin fibers continue to decline. Skin becomes even more dehydrated, could appear thinner and more fragile. Also, this is the time when dark spots start to surface.

Let’s talk about some steps to improve appearance of your skin.

1. Increase Use Of Daily Cleanser

– cleansing your skin is the first step at any age. Want more from you cleanser, try Hydrating Gel Cleanser that thoroughly cleanses and nourishes the skin with a light foaming action. Lactic acid gently exfoliates while improving skin tone and texture including pigmentation discolorations of fine lines. Blue Lotus, a plant extract, rich in phytosterols and flavonoids, that is anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and fights free radicals

2. Fight Skin Discoloration

– during 40’s hyperpigmentation becomes increasingly common due to increased melanin, pigment responsible for color of the eye, skin and hair. To help with dark or blotchy spots try product containing Hydroquinone. Our Lightening Serum is the perfect combination of skin lightener 2% hydroquinone, exfoliants lactic & salicylic acids, and antioxidant Ascorbic Acid. Another great product to try is Ultra 15% Vitamin C Serum. Vitamin C scavenges and destroys reactive oxidizing agents and other free radicals and provides important protection against damage induced by UV radiation

3. Do You Know Your Skin Type

– just like it happened in your 20’s, breakouts may occur in your 40’s due to hormonal changes. Try Renew Serum with 1% retinol to accelerate cellular renewal, 7% glycolic acid that smoothes and improves skin’s texture, and 1% salicylic acid with anti-acne and anti-irritant properties. Another problem that occurs in our 40’s is dry skin. If you had oily skin in the past now your skin could become dry. Advanced B5 Hydration Moisturizer with hyaluronic acid, to attract and maintain hydration and Vitamin B, that helps stabilize moisture content of the skin

4. Retinol Is A Must

– to speed up cell renewal rate. Retinol is an anti-aging ingredient derived from vitamin A; it accelerates cellular renewal and assists in collagen synthesis. Our Tretinol 0.5% Serum with retinol, vitamin E and vitamin C work together to improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, while preventing new wrinkles from forming. Another product to try is Super Serum with retinol, peptides and growth factors to help tighten and strengthen the skin’s cell matrix for the ultimate anti-aging treatment

5. Eye Care

– take the time to take care of your eyes. To prevent and treat crow’s feet try 7.5% Vitamin C Eye Gel. Vitamin C improves skin elasticity, decreases wrinkles by stimulating collagen synthesis, reduces erythema, promotes wound healing and suppresses pigmentation while snap-8, a very potent octopeptide, reduces the appearance of wrinkles on the face caused by the contraction of muscles of facial expression. For maximum results follow up with Cyto-luxe Eye Cream. Active ingredients antarcticine, increases the formation of collagen and elastin, while hibiscus esculentus extract protects cells from oxidative stress as well as inhibits muscle cell contraction

6. Have a monthly facial

– to stimulate cell turnover and restore hydration of the skin. Our Corrective Acid Peels will help improve skin’s texture, aid in acne control, minimize the appearance of premature aging and hyper-pigmentation. After the treatment your skin will appear clearer, younger and fresher, revealing your beautiful complexion. Make an appointment at our Brighton location and your esthetician will choose the best treatment for you.

40’s is the time to shake things up. Whether you have an established workout and diet routine or you have completely giving up its time to try something new.
Try salsa dance class, a bicycle tour or a surfing lesson to boost your enthusiasm and amplify your love for life.

Skin Care in Your 30s

Thirty’s are may be the new twenties but the visual signs of aging begins at this age. Fine lines and wrinkles start to appear, as the skin becomes thinner and production of collagen and elastin starts to slow down. The eyes usually show signs of aging first. Read on to learn more about proper skin care in your 30s.

If your skin was flawless and beautiful in your 20’s without an extra effort, your 30’s is the time to enhance your skin care regiment with the following steps:

1. Clean & Exfoliate

– Cleansing is the most important step in skin care because clean skin is healthy skin. Dull skin can make us look older than we actually are, to prevent that use an exfoliant like Daily Polishing Cleanser. The unique powder formulation effectively cleanses and exfoliates the skin. A combination of jojoba beads that gently exfoliate and salicylic acid that penetrates deeply into the pores to eliminate build-up result in a radiant and evenly-toned skin

2. Accelerate Cell Turnover

– In our 30’s the cell renewal rate usually slows down. Exfoliating with alpha hydroxy acid and retinol helps to remove layers of dead skin cells and accelerate skin renewal. Serum Retinol CS is a great combination of 3% Retinol that accelerates cellular renewal while 5% Glycolic Acid smoothes skin and improves its texture

3. Use Antioxidants

– Antioxidants help repair and prevent damage of the skin, increase collagen production, promote healing and help reduce fine lines and wrinkles. 15% Vitamin C Serum visibly transforms skin’s clarity and reduces the appearance of fine lines. High dose of vitamin C scavenges and destroys reactive oxidizing agents and other free radicals while provides protection against UV radiation and improves skin elasticity

4. Hydrate Inside & Out

– Human body is 60-70% water, drinking enough water is essential for the healthy body and skin. Water gives the skin fresh and radiant glow. Hydrated skin shows fewer signs of aging; therefore, increase the use of moisturizers and hydrating serums. Try B5 Hydration that helps restore the skin’s elasticity with the perfect balance of nourishment and hydration. Hyaluronic acid delivers and maintains water hydration and pro-vitamin B5 assists in stabilizing the moisture content of the skin

5. Protect

– To prevent wrinkles sunscreen must be step in your daily skin care regiment. Try Oil Free SPF 40+ Sunscreen. It provides broad spectrum protection from the sun’s damaging rays while nourishing hydrators and antioxidants help fortify the skin. Hyaluronic acid attracts and maintains hydration to hold 1000 times its weight in water; vitamin E, an antioxidant, protects from oxidative stress and has anti-inflammatory properties

6. Always Look Well Rested

– Thirties, possibly, the busiest time of your life and it’s also the time when dark circles under your eyes start to develop. Using Vital Eye Cream will help hydrate the eye area, leaving it appearing smooth and revitalized. Active ingredient eyeliss helps to prevent puffiness and reduces under eye circles while chamomilla flower extract is an antioxidant with anti-inflammatory properties

7. Have a monthly facial

– a deep cleaning facial with alpha hydroxy acid to hydrate and rejuvenate your skin. Our Hydration Party Treatment with gingko biloba mask, collagen eye mask and lactic acid is ultra energizing. Learn more about different facials we offer and schedule your facial with us!
